Member Spotlight: Amanda Henry

Amanda Henry: This right here is a core member in every sense of the word—especially to me.

Our first few months in our first off-season were tough. I was teaching almost every class, often with just a few people showing up. Amanda and I had more than a few one-on-one sessions together at 5:30 a.m. that September. She kept me going more than she probably realized, and I’ll always be grateful for her support.

She’s also one of the strongest women—mentally and physically—at the gym. This girl loves a hard workout…the tougher, the better!

Beyond gym life, Amanda is the mother of two amazing children and wife to another core member, JR. She has taught Health and Physical Education for 14 years and was honored as Teacher of the Year at CharterTech High School this year.

What you enjoy most about being a teacher:

I love teaching PE because of the strong, positive connections I build with students while helping them grow through movement and teamwork.

What brought you to Ola Kai?

The opening of a CrossFit-style gym, Ola Kai, on the island came at the perfect time—just as I was ready to get back into fitness after my son Mathis was born.

What is your favorite thing about Brigantine?

I enjoy living in Brigantine because of its strong community and close-knit feel. Raising my children here allows them to grow up with the beach around the corner, making it a great place for them to thrive.

How do you feel the type of training you do at Ola Kai helps you in your personal life?

My training at Ola Kai helps me keep up with my children, boost my happiness, and have more energy to enjoy life.

What are some of the biggest benefits you’ve felt since you started at Ola Kai?Being a member of Ola Kai has helped me create a stronger sense of self and gave me the opportunity to reclaim my personal strength after having children.

What class(es) do you enjoy the most?

5:30 AM strength and conditioning. But when I can squeeze it in I also enjoy yoga.

What’s one thing you’ve achieved since becoming a member?

Being selected as teacher of the year was a big achievement for me.

What is one fitness goal you have this year?

My fitness goals are to finish (modified) Murph faster than I did last year and try to improve my relationship with running.

What are some of your favorite things to do on the island?

There’s nothing more enjoyable than feeling the sand beneath my feet or being in the salt water, especially when I’m sharing those moments with my children and husband. It’s the perfect way to connect and unwind as a family.
